4th Dalai Lama : Yonten Gyatso : Yon-tan-rgya-mtsho (1589-1617)

Son of Altan Khan and his second wife PhaKhen Nula, Yonten Gyatso was born in the year 1589 in Mongolia.
He was recognizes as the 3rd Dali Lama by the abbot of Gaden monastery and he was given the name of Yonten Gyatso. His parents refused to part with their son until he was older, so he received his primary religious education in Mongolia from Tibetan Lamas.
In 1601he took his novice vows on the Gaden monastery from Sangya Rinchen. With the age of 26, he took his fully monkhood ordination from the Fourth Panchen Lama, Lobsang Choegyal. He became the abbot of Drepung monastery and then Sera monastery.
He died in 1617, at the age of 27 at the Drepung monastery.
