2nd Dalai Lama : Gedun Gyatso : Dge-’dun-rgya-mtsho (1475-1542)

Son of Kunga Gyaltso and Machik Kunga Pemo, a farming family from Tanag Sekme, near Shigatse in the Tsang region of Central Tibet, H.H. Gedun Gyatso was born there in 1475, named Sangye Phel by his father.
Recognized as the reincarnation of Gedun Drupa (The 1st Dalai Lama) at the age of 11, he was then enthroned in the Tashi Lhumpo monastery. In 1486, he took his novice vows from Panchen Lungrig Gyatso and his vows of Gelong (full ordinated monk) from Choje Choekyi Gyaltsen, who gave him the ordained name of Gedun Gyatso.
He made his studies at Tashi Lhunpo and Drepung monasteries. Becoming abbot of the Drepung monarstery in 1517, until 1525 when he became Sera's monastery abbot.
In 1542 he died with the age of 67.
